AMMAN — The government has
confirmed that it is planning consultancy studies for a Toll Roads project,
which aims to enhance the quality of the Kingdom’s major roads and ensure their
financial sustainability by imposing tolls on their users, Al-Mamlaka TV
reported.

The project comes within the executive
program of Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision (EMV) and was introduced as
an initiative titled “Raising the quality of main roads financed by adopting
toll roads”.
The initiative comes within the
framework of the EMV’s Future Services Driver, under the transport and mobility
sector, which aims to improve transport infrastructure and services, develop a
strategic plan for public transport throughout Jordan, and raise the efficiency
of road management.
The EMV focuses on 64 initiatives with
116 priorities, at a total cost of JD315 million, of which JD91 million will be
spent in 2023.
Possible World Bank financingMeanwhile, the World Bank is considering
financing a project proposed by the government entitled "Sustainable financing
of roads by charging tolls on their users", Al-Mamlaka reported.

According to the proposal, the
project aims to "enhance the performance of the road network in Jordan and
its financial sustainability by attracting private sector investment", at
an indicative value of up to $225 million.
A World Bank report issued in 2019
stated that Jordan’s government is working to develop 14 main vital roads — 12 highways
and two ring roads —at a total length of 1,379km, representing 18 percent of
the Kingdom’s total road networks. The report mentioned that Jordan intended to
integrate the roads into its financial sustainability project by imposing fees on
road users.
The report proposed a unified fee for
tolls on Jordanian highways of JD0.011/km for cars and JD0.022/km for trucks.
