Amman - The special tax on fully electric vehicles, whose custom value is over JD10,000 dinars and does not exceed JD25,000, will be reduced to 20%, instead of 40%, until the end of the year, the government announced.

In a session Saturday chaired by Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan, the cabinet also decided to cut the tax on plug-in EVs with a custom value over JD25,000 to 27.5%, instead of 55%.
The exemption applies to EVs that have been in bonded warehouses and free zones in the Kingdom before the issuance of this decision, it said.
Those who cleared their EVs under the previous tax system before the decision was issued, are eligible for refunding, it said.
The decision is effective from the date of issuance until 31/12/2024, and is not renewable after that, the government stressed.
It came after a two-month government evaluation of recommendations by specialists and stakeholders to amend the special tax on highest-priced electric vehicles.
The government found that most of the observations focused on uncleared cars in the free zone that entered the Kingdom before the decision came into force, which led it to find "logical solutions to ease the burden on citizens and importers and enable them to go ahead and complete procedures."
EVs with a custom value less than JD10,000 are completely exempt from tax to allow middle-income groups to buy them.
