AMMAN — The government plans to train a number of
journalism and media graduates in specific sectors with the aim of narrowing
the gap between the educational output and market needs, according to

A ministry official told
Jordan News that the
government will start the training program in the first quarter of this year,
and that “it is going to be a pilot phase, but we will expand the project upon
reviewing the results of this phase”.
The official added that “the first program of the
project includes training journalism and media graduates who finished their
studies no longer than three years ago and have not held a permanent job so
far”.
The project, in this phase, will give the graduates
the opportunity to train in “tourism media, which will benefit journalism and
media graduates, as well as tourist guides”, the official said, adding that the
number of beneficiaries is expected to reach 15 “in the pilot phase”.
Another field of training will be in health media.
“It is still unclear how many graduates will benefit
from this program, but we expect 30–50. The main objective of training
graduates in health media is to enable them to keep pace with the rapid
developments in the health sector and raise awareness on issues in the health
sector,” said the official, adding that “after the
COVID-19 pandemic, we
noticed that there is a shortage of media workers that are capable of providing
information about the pandemic”.
The official emphasized that the government is
working on getting more support for this project “so that the number of
beneficiaries will increase and we can train as many graduates as possible”.
The project will provide paid internships for
graduates who “will be experimenting with practical training at some Jordanian
media institutions, which will not bear any expense”.
“The main objective is to give graduates a good
period of training so that they can be present in the field as original content
creators, and are also able to compete in the
labor market. This will also
contribute to reducing the gap between education output and labor market
requirements, and contribute, therefore, to a drop in unemployment rates,” said
the official.
The ministry will keep the media updated on project,
once it starts getting implemented, he added.
The government has already taken steps to ensure
that the media receive correct, objective, information by training ministries’
spokespersons; a second phase of this government project will be dedicated to
training official institutions spokespersons.
