HistoryConsidered as one of the oldest prisons in Jordan, the Al-Salt
prison dates back to the Great Arab Revolt. The building was transferred to the
municipality in April 2019, after the gendarmerie forces approved its use in a
cultural project.
The prison building has a rich political history, which recounts
the foundation of Jordan and the heroism of its sons in standing against
colonialism and liberation. Historian Mohammad N. Khreisat revealed that the
prison was established during the Ottoman era in 1867.
Tourism and heritageThe MP of Salt, Talal Al-Nour, has requested that the prison be
transformed into a panorama exhibition showcasing the founding and development
of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The proposal also highlights the archaeological and heritage
landmarks in the city, aimed at making the site a main attraction for tourists,
researchers, historians, and visitors to the city.
The building covers an area of 4 dunums and 304m, and studies
conducted in 2019 proposed the establishment of a museum and restaurant within
the prison building. The cost of maintaining the building was estimated at
JD220,000.
New tourist destinationObservers believe that the old Al-Salt prison could be turned into
a hotel at the entrance of the city or utilized to establish a group of outdoor
and indoor restaurants with recreational facilities.
They also suggest that a cultural center could be established to
make the site a tourist destination, adding to the tourism path in the city.
After months of calling on the government to transform the old
Al-Salt prison, Nsour stated that his proposal is still being studied by the
Al-Salt municipality for design.
There is a great interest in implementing the
project on the ground through several meetings with the prime minister,
interior, and tourism ministers, he added.
