AMMAN - Al Hussein Technical University (
HTU), a Crown Prince Foundation initiative, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support skills development for youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

In a statement on Thursday, the HTU said that its "strategic cooperation" with the EBRD seeks to promote access to market-relevant skills, especially for women and youth in Jordan, who are interested in pursuing careers in STEM. The partnership will especially focus on work-based learning and enhancing access to digital and green skills for youth, with a focus on digital transformation and sustainability, the statement added.
As a first step, the EBRD and the HTU will cooperate with the NEPCO Electricity Training Centre (ETC) to develop a unique apprenticeship scheme in electrical engineering; whereby student will undergo an 8-month training at the ETC, including 5 months of joining NEPCO technical teams for practical work experience in the field. The EBRD and the University intend to continue to explore areas of collaboration on improving access to skills in Jordan.
In this context, HTU president Ismael al-Hinti lauded the cooperation and the ERBD's support to the university's students and Jordanian youth. He also underlined the importance of technical and STEM-based education, adding that matching educational outcomes with the needs of the labor market is part of the HTU's mission to bridge the existing gap in this area and equip youth with latest technologies and advanced skills.
Philip ter Woort, EBRD's Director for the southern and eastern Mediterranean region, said: "Promoting economic inclusion through improved access to skills is a key priority of the Bank's engagement in Jordan. We are proud of this engagement with Al Hussein Technical University which will improve youth's access to green and digital skills in STEM industries."
Rami Samain, Regional Lead for the Gender and Economic Inclusion portfolio of the EBRD, stated that "this partnership is only the start of a long and fruitful engagement with Al Hussein Technical University, where we will continue to explore improving youth's access to skills and jobs in technology, engineering, innovation, and entrepreneurship."
Since the start of its operations in Jordan in 2012, the EBRD has invested more than EUR 1.5 billion in the country through 61 projects, including more than EUR 535 million in loans to projects in the country's energy sector.
