Astronomer Imad Mujahed explains that the harvest moon occurs
when a full moon aligns with the autumnal equinox, usually on September 21.
During this time, the moon rises higher and shines brighter in the northern
sky, appearing earlier than in other months.
The moon usually rises 50 minutes later than the previous
night, but during the harvest moon, it's 30 to 35 minutes later in equatorial
regions and rises a few minutes before sunset.
European farmers have used the
moon's brightness during this
event to work at night for generations, earning it the name "harvest
moon" among astronomers.
