According to a statement from the center on Wednesday, its chairman, Dr. Adel Al-Balbisi, stated that non-communicable diseases are one of the major health challenges facing healthcare systems globally and locally, as they are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, including in Jordan.
He added that the release of the national survey results represents a pivotal step towards developing health policies based on scientific evidence and strengthening coordination among concerned authorities to ensure an effective response that contributes to preventing these diseases and reducing their risk factors.
Al-Balbisi emphasized that the center believes prevention and early preparedness are fundamental in addressing health challenges, stressing the importance of cooperation with partners from various sectors, both at the national and international levels, to adopt best practices and effective health policies that enhance the ability to tackle this major health challenge.
He also highlighted the center’s efforts to share the report's findings with decision-makers and relevant authorities to ensure the implementation of best practices and strengthen national strategies in the field of prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, which have become a significant health challenge and impose both a health and economic burden on healthcare systems, requiring effective measures to reduce their impact through prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment.
For his part, Dr. Mustafa Al-Amawi, Chairman of the Legal Committee in the House of Representatives, confirmed the council's readiness to cooperate with the National Center for Epidemics and Communicable Diseases and all concerned bodies to establish appropriate legislation that strengthens the health system in the kingdom as a fundamental pillar of national security.
Al-Amawi pointed out Jordan’s great reputation in the health sector and its role in exporting expertise to neighboring countries to help them build their healthcare systems, stressing the need to enhance these achievements, correct any deficiencies, and formulate policies and legislation needed to improve healthcare for citizens.
Meanwhile, Dr. Riyad Al-Shayyab, Director of Primary Health Care at the Ministry of Health, noted the significant efforts made by the National Center throughout the year to reach this important stage in reviewing and discussing the report on non-communicable diseases, in cooperation with the Ministry and other partner institutions.
Al-Shayyab explained that non-communicable diseases cause more than three-quarters of deaths in Jordan and contribute to a significant burden of morbidity, which places a strain on the government, institutions, and individuals in efforts to prevent and treat these diseases. He emphasized that the Ministry of Health, in cooperation with various partner institutions, is working on developing preventive strategies, guidelines, and policies to address this burden.
He added that, due to the numerous and complex nature of non-communicable diseases and the institutions and policies related to them, conducting a comprehensive survey of all strategies and policies for non-communicable diseases is of particular importance to describe the current situation and lay the groundwork for a unified national strategy for the prevention of non-communicable diseases, pointing to the central role of the National Center in shaping health policies related to disease prevention.
The Epidemiological Monitoring Directorate team at the National Center for Epidemics presented a detailed overview of the key documents related to non-communicable diseases, the main partners for the survey objectives, and the scientific methodology used to collect policies, strategies, protocols, and guidelines available in Jordan.
