AMMAN — A member of the National Epidemiological Committee, Bassam Hijjawi, said on Friday that there is nothing preventing the new COVID-19 variant discovered in South Africa from entering countries around the world.

Hijjawi called for "severe" precautionary measures to be taken in order to prevent the entry of the new mutant + B.1.1.529 + and combat its spread in Jordan and around the world, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.
He added, to Al-Mamlaka that there is strong epidemiological monitoring in Jordan, but everyone should receive the COVID vaccine, stating that as long as the number who gets vaccinated is low, the spread of the virus will increase.
According to Hijjawi, 77 cases of infections of the new variant have been recorded in African countries since its discovery was announced.
He also indicated that there is no accurate information about the new mutant so far, and no one knows the extent of its contagiousness.
