AMMAN — The monthly
average of hybrid vehicle clearance has dropped by more that 50 percent in
2021, compared to the monthly clearance average in 2020, head of the Jordanian

In a press statement on Monday,
Al Bustanji indicated that the monthly clearance rate of hybrid cars during
2020 stood at some 1,600 vehicles, in comparison to a monthly average of 650
vehicles during 2021. He added that the drop in the clearance of vehicles with
hybrid engines was due to the hike of taxes levied on them from 5 percent to 45
percent.
He confirmed that the
decline will be compounded as the next year begins, when the tax exemption
approved by the Council of Ministers in June of 2018 expires and the tax
becomes 55 percent.
He emphasized that a
55-percent tax on hybrid engines will “paralyze” their clearance at the
beginning of 2022.
According to Bustanji,
around 11,500 vehicles with petrol and diesel engines, 3,200 hybrid vehicles,
and 1,000 electric motor vehicles were cleared during the first five months of
this year.
Bustanji added that 18,300
vehicles were re-exported from the Zarqa Free Zone during the first five months
of 2021, compared to 27,300 vehicles for the same period last year, marking a
decline of over 30 percent.
