AMMAN — Chairman of the
Independent Election Commission (IEC) Musa Maaytah said that at the current stage,
“successful” implementation of party-based action and upcoming elections will
be a key opportunity to strengthen the future engagement of youths in Jordan’s
political life, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

His statement is part of his working paper titled “Future of Political
Parties: Opportunities and Challenges” delivered at the final conference of the
“Enabled Environment for the Promotion of Freedoms, Democracy and Rule of Law”
project, which was organized by Jordanian Masarat Foundation for Development.
Jordan’s political parties have a chance to be successful due to the state
institutions’ recognition of the importance of shifting toward supporting
partisan work, he noted.
Maaytah said Jordan’s revised regulations offer “important” opportunities,
as the new Politial Parties Law aims to strengthen popular participation and
activate the role of youths and women, and contains articles that protect
partisan work to allay youths’ concerns.
The decision to put the political parties’ file under IEC’s umbrella, in
accordance with the recent constitutional amendments, provides an opportunity
to develop partisan work, and reflects trust in the neutrality of IEC, Maaytah
said.
Engagement in partisan work will be the “true” practical aspect that
reflects the government’s seriousness to develop and modernize, and the shift
toward partisan work, he pointed out.
He
said the continued effort to engage in partisan work tops the list of
challenges.
