“We commend the
latest statement made by the King of Jordan about Iran, and we are looking
forward to witnessing genuine action from neighboring countries toward
enhancing regional relations,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser
Kanaani said.
“We consider the
safety of neighboring states as our own,” he said, adding that Iran rejects
accusations that the Islamic republic interferes in the internal affairs of
nations in the region.
“We have played a
positive role with regard to Jordan, and without our role in combating
terrorism in
Iraq and
Syria, Jordan’s security would also have been
threatened,” he contended.
His Majesty,
during an interview on July 23, said that Jordan does “not want regional
tensions”, adding that Jordan “and all Arab countries, seek good relations with
Iran, based on mutual respect, good neighborly relations, and respect for
countries’ sovereignty and non-intervention in their internal affairs.”
“Iranian interventions
have impacted a number of
Arab countries, and we now regularly face attacks on
our borders from Iran-linked militias,” King Abdullah said, expressing hope
that Iran will “change” its behavior in the interests of “everyone in the
region”.
