AMMAN — The import of
oil from Iraq to Jordan has come to a halt at the beginning of April following the end of the
memorandum of understanding that supplies Jordan with crude oil, despite the
Iraqi cabinet's approval to renew the agreement.

Nael Thiabat, the director of the
Iraqi oil carrier company to Jordan, said that the company has stopped importing oil
until the memorandum is signed by both countries.
He explained that the government must
sign the agreement for the oil to be supplied to Jordan, indicating that the delay
may be on the Iraqi side.
Compensation for delayed importationThiabat also pointed out that the company
may call for compensation for the days it
stopped importing oil until the memorandum is signed.
The new memorandum allows for the
importation of 10,000 barrels per day, he added.
In March 2023, Jordan imported 310,000
barrels of oil. The Iraqi cabinet approved the recommendation of the Energy
Council last Tuesday, renewing the memorandum of understanding that supplies
Jordan with crude oil for one year.
Jordan imports Iraqi crude oil under a
memorandum of understanding for supplying crude oil signed between the
Jordanian and Iraqi governments.
The memorandum has been in effect since the
beginning of September 2021.
