AMMAN — Celebrations marking Irbid as the Capital of
Arab Culture for the year 2022 will be held at Yarmouk University on Sunday,
Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh, who is also chairman of the celebration’s Higher National
Committee, is scheduled to deliver a speech at the event, slated to start at
7pm.
Additional
speeches are planned by
Minister of Culture Haifa Al-Najjar, and the
director-general of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific
Organization, Mohamed Amar, according to a statement by the Ministry of
Culture.
The ceremony
will see a flag from Bethlehem, delivered by the Palestinian Minister of
Culture Atef Abu Seif to Najjar, his Jordanian counterpart.
An operetta
entitled “Irbid the Chrysanthemum of Life”, will follow. It will review
Jordan’s history during the various historical periods and its cultural
achievements in the last 100 years, while entering its second centennial.
Najjar said she
was happy for the celebration, noting that Jordan is literally and
metaphorically located in the heart of the Arab world.
She pointed to
Jordan’s deep cultural history and diversity that enriches the Arab cultural
presence and enhances the communication and dialogue which leads to deep bonds
between Arab countries.
The statement
said the Qatari Minister of Culture, Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al-Thani,
said that choosing Irbid this year asserts the depth of Jordanian culture and
its central position in the Arab cultural scene.
