AMMAN —
The
Islamic Action Front (IAF) denounced a statement by Israeli Prime Minister
Naftali Bennett in which he failed to recognize the Hashemite custodianship of
holy shrines in occupied Jerusalem, describing it as foreign interference.

Traditionally,
Jordan cared for
Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem since Israeli
occupation forces captured the territory in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The
Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty, signed in 1994, recognized a ‘’special’’
Jordanian role in caring for Jerusalem’s shrines.
Amman Net said the
IAF’s Executive Office contended that Bennett’s statements, made as
provocations by Israeli forces and settlers mounted in the holy sites, are
considered a ‘’huge trespassing on Jordan’s sovereignty and its historical role
in Jerusalem.’’
It said the
statement and transgressions should be met with an abolishment of the peace
treaty and subsequent agreements with Israel.
Bennett’s
statement ‘’expose Israeli intentions and threats, which target Jordan and its
people,’’ IAF said. That requires ‘’strict and immediate measures’’, it added.
IAF maintained
that all forms of coordination and normalization with Israel must cease in line
with the sentiments of the Jordanian people, who consider Israel the ‘’first
enemy of the country and the
(Arab) nation.’’
IAF questioned to
what extent the Jordanian government could work to ‘’stop the Israeli
provocations and protect Jordan’s sovereignty and role towards the holy
sites.’’
IAF demanded a
national strategy and adopting a new approach based on supporting resistance,
liberation, and the resilience of the Palestinian people. It also called for
strengthening political relations with Palestinian factions.
