According to Abdul-Sattar Al-Qudah, director of Al-Aqsa
Mosque and Jerusalem Affairs Department at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic
Affairs, the number of arrestees among the awqaf department stood at five at
dawn.
Later in the day Qudah confirmed to Jordan News that the
number rose to seven.
Qudah said no more details were available, but ministry
officials were in a meeting Sunday morning to follow up on the case.
Ten Palestinian youth were arrested at the time of dawn
prayers at
Al-Aqsa, the third holiest Muslim shrine and a hotspot of
confrontation between Palestinians and the Israeli occupation forces and Jewish
settlers, who frequently try to storm the holy site, which is under Jordanian
custodianship.
Such clashes, along with an Israeli decision to forcibly
evict Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood
of East Jerusalem triggered a war between Gaza-based resistance groups and
Israel.
A ceasefire came into effect Friday morning, but Israel
renewed its raids on the compound hours later as the faithful gathered for
Friday prayers.
