AMMAN — The
Islamic Christian Committee to Defend Jerusalem and the
Holy Sites warned of an
Israeli plan to undermine the authority of the Islamic Awqaf in Jerusalem and
violate the Hashemite custodianship of
Al-Aqsa mosque, according to a
statement.

The committee stated on Monday that Israeli
occupation forces’ obstruction of the Islamic Awqaf ‘s functions reached
unacceptable levels, and seriously threatens its powers as the body with
exclusive responsibility for the management and maintenance of Al-Aqsa mosque.
It said the Awqaf’s authority stems from the legal, political, and religious
legitimacy of the Hashemite custodianship of Muslim and Christian holy sites in
Jerusalem.
The committee confirmed that the obstruction of renovations
inside the mosque and the ongoing attacks on the staff of the reconstruction
commission by Israeli forces, in addition to the increasing wave of daily
incursions by settlers who carry out various forms of violations against the
sanctity of the mosque is a very clear and strong indicator of the Israeli
establishment’s objective is to alter the historical, legal, and religious
status of Al-Aqsa mosque.
