AMMAN — Italian Ambassador to Jordan Fabio Cassese and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in Jordan Nabil Assaf signed Sunday an agreement valued at 1 million euros to build the resilience of vulnerable communities Jordan through the Italian-funded “Sustainable Production and Utilization of Agro-natural Resources” (SPUAR) project.اضافة اعلان

The agreement was inked during a ceremony attended by the head of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Amman, Emilio Cabasino, at the agency’s headquarters.

The project targets vulnerable communities to improve their access to socioeconomic infrastructure in the governorate of Maan, with a focus on soil and water conservation using sustainable management tools to empower local rural communities.

“Italy’s partnership with FAO focuses on actions to counteract the detrimental impact of resource scarcity poverty and human development,” said Ambassador Cassese, who expressed pride at being part of the project.

The project will be implemented in southern Jordan, targeting the most vulnerable households in Maan, providing an enabling environment for women's participation, by establishing non-conventional water resources, FAO Representative Assaf said. “We chose Maan because of its underdeveloped livelihoods and scarcity of water resources,” he told Jordan News.

The project aims to establish a sustainable enterprise using the agro-natural resources of land, water, and vegetation available in Maan, targeting a total of 120 households, including female-headed households, youth, as well as people with disabilities. The project also seeks to establish rooftop water harvesting systems and provide the communities with food processing equipment.

As the agricultural sector consumes around 510 million cubic meters (51 percent) of the annual available fresh water, and demand for water increases yearly for various sectors, scarcity of water resources has become a major challenge for Jordan and a limiting factor for economic development, particularly for farmers whose livelihood relies on land produce.
