AMMAN — A senior Italian official has praised Jordan for its efforts to host and support Syrian refugees.
Quoted in a press statement by the Italian embassy in Jordan, visiting Italian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs
Marina Sereni thanked the
Kingdom for “bearing a heavy burden due to the inflow of Syrian refugees. We commend your solidarity in supporting the Syrian population.”

Sereni started on Wednesday a three-day political mission in which “ties between the two countries will be strengthened, just five months after the previous visit by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio,” according to the statement.
Sereni signed on the Cooperation Subsidiary Agreement with Jordan for 2021-2023 with the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh.
Under the deal, Italy provides Jordan grants worth 30 million euros and soft loans for 185 million euros. The funds will be used to improve the healthcare and agriculture sectors.
Recently Italy has supported Jordan with a significant soft loan worth 85 million euros to strengthen the education sector, and confirmed its commitment in response to the Syrian crisis, in Syria and in neighboring countries with 45 million euros.
Earlier Wednesday, the Italian official met the representatives of the Italian civil society organizations working in Jordan, “praising their commitment and efforts in many crucial sectors of social cohesion and development” the embassy said in the statement.
Sereni also visited the Palestinian refugee camp of Hitteen and participated in the handover of the “Housing reconstruction in Hitteen Palestinian refugee camp” project funded by Italy.
