JAEC’s Gamma Irradiation Facility Secures Global ISO 13485 Certification
Amman - The Gamma Irradiation Facility, part of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), has been awarded the ISO 13485 certification by LARQ/UKAS, an international accreditation body.اضافة اعلان

Chairman of JAEC, Khaled Toukan, highlighted the importance of this accreditation in a statement released on Wednesday. He emphasized that it strengthens Jordan's position in medical device manufacturing, enhancing the quality of services provided by the facility and bolstering the country’s medical supplies industry. He described the achievement as a major step forward in advancing the facility's capabilities and supporting Jordan's healthcare sector.

Since 1994, the IAEA has supplied Jordan with a research gamma irradiator using the radioactive isotope "Cobalt-60" with an initial radiation activity of 11.5 kilocuries. This facility has played a key role in the introduction of peaceful nuclear technologies and the training of local experts. In 2021, additional radiation sources were installed, including 27 kilocuries for the commercial irradiation facility and 7 kilocuries for research purposes.

Looking ahead, the JAEC is set to increase the facility’s radiation capacity with a new source expected to provide 54 kilocuries by next year, which will enable the facility to offer a wider range of services with higher efficiency.

The Gamma Irradiation Facility plays a critical role in sterilizing medical products, including empty eye drop containers, eye ointment tubes, dialysis units, laboratory dishes, blood collection tubes, rubber gloves, burn wraps, and veterinary vaccines, among other pharmaceutical items.

The facility had previously earned ISO 9001 certification from SGS, a global leader in inspection, verification, and certification, further solidifying its reputation as a leading provider of high-quality radiation sterilization services.
