AMMAN — The Draft General Budget
Law for 2023 has allocated JD200,000 for projects supervised by the
Department of Antiquities to maintain and restore sites in Jerash Governorate,
according to data made available to Al-Mamlaka TV.

Director of the
Jerash Department of
Antiquities Muhammad Al-Shalabi said that the funds will be used to
rehabilitate, maintain, and restore the archaeological city of Jerash and
several other archaeological landmarks.
The
Department of Antiquities has completed
all the works scheduled for the current year, among them projects to maintain
and restore mosaic floors and water drainage channels in the historic city, build
retaining walls, and remove weeds from site, according to Shalabi.
The funds will be used to rehabilitate, maintain, and restore the archaeological city of Jerash and several other archaeological landmarks.
Other restoration works in 2022 included
sustainability projects at the third-century tomb of the Roman centurion
Germanus, the byzantine octagonal Martyrion Church, and the Temple of Artemis,
as well as a project to document artifacts. The department has also issued a
tender to renovate the Jerash Archaeological Museum, he said.
Shalabi noted that maintenance and cleaning
work sat the archaeological sites provided about 300 temporary
job opportunities for the people of the governorate.
The Governorate of Jerash’s total capital
expenditures for 2023 were estimated at JD8.6 million within the draft law.
