All approvals issued by the JFDA for the import of
titanium dioxide will also be canceled, according to the decision.
The move comes in light of a study conducted by the
European Food Safety Authority, which showed that titanium dioxide is
considered unsafe for use in the food industry.
The JFDA also decided to prohibit any use of titanium
dioxide in the Kingdom’s food industry, and to discontinue the registration of
special-use foods and supplements for athletes containing the substance.
