Rigorous health, technical
assessments
JFDA Director-General Nizar Mheidat said that
all imported and domestic food products, including fish and canned tuna
products, are subject to the health requirements and technical rules of the
International Food Code, Jo24 reported.
Canned tuna in the Jordanian market is produced
from healthy tuna fish that is packed in containers, then sealed and heat-treated
to ensure its suitability for consumption, he said. The safety of the Kingdom’s
canned tuna is also confirmed by the laboratory tests conducted by qualified
technicians who use the most updated and accurate laboratory equipment
available.
In addition, the director-general said, the
JFDA implements periodic monitoring throughout the year, including examinations
of random samples of canned tuna products sold in the domestic market.
Canned tuna concernsMheidat’s reassurances came in response to
a recent report warning that the levels of
toxic mercury in canned tuna were
"unpredictable".
The American organization "Consumer
Reports" had conducted an investigation in which it had tested 30 cans of
tuna from five famous brands, and found that some cans contained higher mercury
levels, or “spikes”, compared to others.
