In a press
conference, Mhaidat said that the price of medicines is one of the most
important issues that the agency had worked on during 2021, adding that what is
important is to provide citizens with medicines at the most appropriate prices.
Mhaidat said that
the JFDA had reviewed the prices of 23 percent of existing, registered and
circulating medicines in Jordan which resulted in the reduction of prices of
873 pharmaceutical brands.
There are a total
of 4,183 drugs registered with the JFDA that are priced and in circulation,
according to Mhaidat.
Meanwhile, Jordan
exported 2,294 pharmaceutical products to 59 markets around the world in 2021,
despite the “difficulty of shipping and transportation” during the COVID19
pandemic, Mhaidat said.
He added that
Jordan enjoys a JD150 million trade surplus in pharmaceuticals.
In pre-pandemic
years, Jordanian drugs were exported to 71 global markets, according to
Mhaidat, who added that the total value of local pharmaceutical exports
amounted to JD528.9 million. On the other hand, 2,971 imported medicinal
products were approved in 2021, he said.
Mhaidat said that
284 medical brands were registered in 2021, of which 174 were local and 110
were imported.
The value of food
imports, last year, amounted to about JD2.2 billion, which is a “large number
for imports of foodstuff”. In contrast, the value of food exports amounted to
JD610 million, according to Mhaidat.
