AMMAN — The chairman of the Jordan Atomic
Energy Commission (JAEC), Khaled Toukan, stated that the Jordan Research and
Training Reactor (JRTR) stands as one of the latest nuclear research reactors
globally. Operated entirely by Jordanian personnel, from maintenance and
operations to reactor control and security, the facility boasts a fully
Jordanian crew.

Toukan noted that the reactor is considered
one of the main pillars of progress in peaceful nuclear energy applications,
not only at the Jordanian level but also at the regional level, Khaberni
reported.
He said, "The reactor, due to its
unique characteristics and its distinction as one of the very modern reactors
with advanced control systems and advanced safety and security systems, is
considered a training platform for international energy and atomic energy,
which has been adopted in recent years as one of the main pillars to enhance
the qualitative capabilities not only at the Jordanian level, but also at the
Middle Eastern and Arab countries in the Arab East.”
Additionally, Toukan mentioned that the
reactor is being used to generate medical radioactive isotopes for cancer
treatment.
"Since 2018, we have been providing
[radioactive iodine-131] used in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer
to all hospitals in the Kingdom, military hospitals, government hospitals,
university hospitals, and private nuclear medicine clinics with this important
element.”
Toukan also pointed out that the reactor
was established on the campus of the Jordan University of Science and
Technology and has been operational since early 2017. It is a five-megawatt
multipurpose reactor, and its main objective, as indicated by its name, is
training and building human capabilities and advanced scientific research, in
addition to peaceful nuclear applications.
Regarding the reason for establishing the
reactor on the university campus, Toukan highlighted that it was established on
the university campus to provide nuclear engineering students at that
university with scientific experience and to conduct very advanced experiments
using this nuclear reactor for students of the Nuclear Engineering College and
some departments of science in that university and some other Jordanian
universities.
Notably, His Majesty King Abdullah,
accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, visited the JRTR, shedding
light on Jordan's progress in the field of nuclear science research and serving
as a training and educational platform, in addition to its contribution to
supporting the medical and industrial sectors.
