The Government of Japan has decided to provide a grant of $122,881 to the Greater Karak Municipality for the procurement of garbage trucks under the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program.

The grant agreement was signed by H.E. Mr. Asari Hideki, Ambassador of Japan to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and H.E. Eng. Mohammad Al-Maaytah, Mayor of Greater Karak Municipality, during a signing ceremony on February 24, 2025.
Enhancing Waste Management in Karak
This grant aims to address the municipality’s waste collection challenges in Karak, a city with a growing population of 130,600 residents, including Syrian refugees. Since its establishment in 1893, the Greater Karak Municipality has been committed to improving the lives of its residents. The two garbage trucks funded by this grant will enhance the municipality's waste collection capacity, ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for the people of Karak.
During the signing ceremony, Ambassador Asari Hideki commended the municipality for its dedication to public service, stating:
"The Greater Karak Municipality has a proud history of serving its people since 1893. For over 130 years, it has demonstrated resilience and commitment to improving the lives of its residents. This project is yet another step in its dedication to building a better future for the community. I am confident that this grant will contribute to ensuring a healthier environment for all."
In response, Mayor Mohammad Al-Maaytah expressed his pride in the partnership with the Japanese Embassy and highlighted the positive impact of the grant:
"This generous grant will provide us with two garbage collection trucks, marking a significant improvement in the services provided to our citizens. It will enhance waste collection efficiency, reduce operational burdens, and contribute to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable environment."
He also reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to managing the new trucks efficiently to ensure the highest level of waste collection services for Karak’s residents. Mayor Al-Maaytah extended his deep gratitude to the Government of Japan, Ambassador Asari Hideki, and the embassy staff for their strong support.
Japan’s Continued Support for Jordan
Under the GGP program, Japan has provided over $10.5 million in grants to support 160 projects for NGOs, schools, hospitals, and municipalities across Jordan since 1993.
