Saturday’s ceremony was held at the main square in the Roman-ruin city,
where 250,000 converged to attend various activities this year, said Mazen
Kawar, the festival’s executive director.
About 1,500 artists and musicians from 18 countries participated, holding
250 artistic, cultural, and craft activities. Also, about 80 local, Arab, and
international bands took part in the 10-day event.
Minister of Culture Haifa Al-Najjar, who also heads the festival’s Higher
Committee, said this year’s event coincided with Jordan’s second Centennial.
She praised this year’s event, pointing to positive feedback from bands
and visitors alike.
The festival was launched in 1980 under an initiative by Yarmouk
University. It was turned into an official festival, which convened for the
first time in 1981. The festival is held every summer, displaying global
artistic, literary, and cultural events.
