Speaking before the General Assembly during its session on the Palestinian issue, Jordan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Mahmoud Hamoud, underscored the Palestinian people's right to self-determination. He called on member states to recognize the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, describing it as a minimal step toward supporting Palestinians' resilience on their land.
Hamoud stressed the importance of enforcing legal and political measures to protect the Palestinian people and holding Israel judicially accountable for its crimes and violations. He called for measures to prevent Israel from accessing weapons and technologies used to suppress Palestinians.
The ambassador highlighted the numerous UN resolutions and initiatives aimed at establishing a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue. He reiterated Jordan’s support for a two-state solution, envisioning an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967, lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Despite these efforts, Hamoud noted, Israel persists in its colonial practices, including land seizures, settlement expansions, and transferring Israeli citizens to occupied Palestinian territories. He also condemned the actions of extremists and settlers who target Palestinians, burn homes and farms, and seize lands, further undermining the aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Hamoud criticized the international community's silence and failure to hold Israel accountable, stating that such inaction enables Israel's violations of international law and emboldens its disregard for UN resolutions. He accused Israel of manipulating the United Nations, threatening its officials, and targeting humanitarian staff, resulting in significant loss of life among UN personnel.
