The session, addressing pressing energy issues, focuses on advancing electricity generation, integrating green hydrogen, desalinating seawater with nuclear energy, and enhancing energy efficiency in Arab countries.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh emphasized the significance of this meeting amid a global shift in energy systems. He highlighted the need to transition from traditional grids to smart networks and renewable energy, while strengthening regional and international electrical interconnection.

Kharabsheh underscored that leveraging natural resources is essential for integrating Arab countries into the global energy transformation and regional interconnection systems.

He detailed ongoing efforts to bolster electricity interconnection in the region, citing Jordan’s projects with Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia, expressing optimism that completing these projects would elevate electricity exchange operations and pave the way for a unified Arab electricity market connected to global networks.

The minister also pointed to the region's potential as a leader in green energy, particularly green hydrogen, for both local consumption and export to meet international sustainability goals.

Highlighting Jordan’s renewable energy achievements, Kharabsheh noted the nation’s rapid progress, increasing renewable energy's share in its electricity mix from less than 1% in 2014 to 27% in 2024, with plans to surpass 30% by 2030. This growth includes innovative storage technologies, such as the country’s first pumped-storage hydropower project, which will have a 450 MW capacity and seven-hour storage capability.

Jordan is also advancing its energy infrastructure by upgrading transmission and distribution networks, introducing smart grid technologies, and fostering electric transportation with supportive infrastructure, he said.

In green hydrogen, Jordan has developed a national strategy to attract investments and build a regulatory framework. Kharabsheh added that the country has signed 14 memoranda of understanding and a framework agreement with local and global firms to explore investment opportunities, alongside studies for a joint infrastructure model to ensure alignment with investor and stakeholder interests.

Kharabsheh underscored Jordan's commitment to establishing itself as a hub for green energy innovation and collaboration, contributing to regional and global sustainability goals.
