The total financing for the project is 71.3
million euros, funded by the grant and a soft loan provided by the bank in the
amount of 41.3 million euros, Minister of Planning and International
Cooperation Zeina Toukan said in a press release.
Project goalsThe new modern wastewater treatment plant
in the Al-Ghabawi area, which will be constructed through the funding, aims to
improve the level of services provided to citizens and developing the water and
sanitation system, in line with government priorities within the Executive
Program 2023–2025 for
Economic Modernization Vision.
The project will also work to raise the
efficiency of the Kingdom’s wastewater treatment system, address environmental
risks in the surrounding area, and rehabilitate capacities in refugee-hosting
areas.
The minister called the plant “one of the most important projects for the water sector because of its contribution to easing traffic congestion and unpleasant odors in the Ain Ghazal area”.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the
Jordanian government by Toukan, and on behalf of the EBRD by its president,
Odile Reno Basso. The signing was attended by Minister of Water and Irrigation
Mohammed Al-Najjar and the Ambassador of the
European Union Delegation to Amman Maria Hadjitheodosiou.
Treatment plant detailsDuring the signing, Najjar explained that
the Water Authority and the
Ministry of Water and Irrigation will construct the
treatment plant for wastewater transported by tankers to the Al-Ghabawi area,
which is 20 km east of Amman. The plant will have a capacity of about 24,750
cubic meters per day. Tankers will transport wastewater to the new plant
instead of a primary treatment station in the Ain Ghazal area.
The minister called the plant “one of the
most important projects for the water sector because of its contribution to
easing traffic congestion and unpleasant odors in the Ain Ghazal area”. It will
“contribute significantly to improving the environmental situation in the
area”, he said.
