It said the effort to support UNRWA will take place
on the margins of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, set to be held
in September.
According to a knowledgeable source at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Jordan is making significant efforts to
support
UNRWA, working jointly with international partners, to mobilize the
necessary political and financial support for the agency.
The source said the effort was needed to enable the
agency to continue providing vital services to Palestinian refugees in
accordance with its UN mandate to maintain its healthcare and education
services to refugees.
“Jordan counts on the international conference to
adopt effective strategies and plans to ensure the agency’s continued support
for sustaining the vital health, education, and relief services it provides to
Palestinian refugees” according to the ministry source, who preferred
anonymity.
Jordan and Sweden
have previously co-chaired a donors’ conference last November 16, which took
place in Brussels, with the participation of 29 ministers of foreign affairs,
ministers of state, deputy ministers, and representatives of 61 countries and
international organizations.
Additional contributions pledged during last year’s
conference amounted to $38 million. Eight member states announced a total
contribution of over $614 million through multi-year agreements, new or
renewable for periods of two to five years.
Participants emphasized that such existing
multi-year pledges, if achieved in full and at projected levels, would be
equivalent to 40 percent of the agency’s core budget requirements for 2022.
