AMMAN — Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Al Safadi on
Monday met with the commissioner-general of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, to
discuss an upcoming conference to drum up financial and political support to
the relief agency.

The international conference will be co-organized before the end of 2021
by Sweden and Jordan in cooperation with UNRWA. Participants are expected to
approve effective strategies and plans to ensure continuous support for the
agency, which provides health, education, and relief services for Palestinian
refugees in five operation areas, including Jordan, the largest host of these
refugees, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
Safadi and Lazzarini stressed the importance of
Gaza reconstruction by
providing the necessary support for the construction process and responding to
the city’s needs quickly.
For his part, Lazzarini commended Jordan’s role in coordination with the
international community provide the necessary support for the agency and to
close its financial deficit.
Safadi and Lazzarini agreed on maintaining coordination and consultation
with Sweden and Stockholm group members.
UNRWA has appealed for $1.5 billion to support Palestine refugees in
2021 to fund its essential services, emergency appeals and priority projects
for registered Palestine refugees in the West Bank (including East Jerusalem),
Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, according to the agency’s website.
