AMMAN — The Shorufat Center for Globalization and Terrorism
Studies has reported that Jordan’s position on the
Global Terrorism Index (GTI)
for 2023 has witnessed a continued improvement for the second consecutive year,
securing the 68 rank out of 163 countries, Khaberni reported.

Jordan’s rise in the GTI ranking is attributed to a 10-point
decrease in terrorism levels from 2022, when it previously held the 58
position, affirming Jordan's continued placement in the list of secure
countries.
According to Jordan’s annual
Terrorism Index report, the
year 2023 saw no successful or thwarted terrorist operations. This keeps the
total number of terrorist operations from 1921 to December 31, 2023, at 168,
including 138 successful terrorist operations and 30 failed ones.
The report highlighted recent and
alarming global terrorism events and trends, including Israel’s war on Gaza, weapons smuggling, and
recruitment through social media. In response, Jordan and its various agencies
are urged to remain vigilant, exercise caution, and enhance security and
intelligence monitoring of national security threats, emphasizing the
importance of revitalizing and implementing the
National Strategy to counter Violent Extremism and Terrorism in Jordan, issued in 2014.
The results indicated that, since the establishment of
Jordan, 30 unsuccessful terrorist operations were recorded, meaning they were
thwarted by the General Intelligence Directorate (GID) to prevent their
execution. Within the overall count of terrorist operations, 34 were associated
with unknown perpetrators whose identities were not officially disclosed in the
media.
Furthermore, the report revealed that Jordan maintains a low
rate of terrorist operations compared to its regional counterparts, but
maintains a consistent annual rate. Throughout the past thirty years, Jordan
has witnessed an average of two terrorist operations, whether successful or
thwarted, on an annual basis.
History of terrorism in Jordan
Terrorism in Jordan demonstrates a pattern similar to waves
rather than a distinct trend, due to the interference of crises, conflicts,
economic, social, cultural, and political events both within and beyond the
borders of Jordan.
New events and
trends
Since 2021, there has been a growing tendency to focus on
personnel within the security apparatus, including individuals in Public
Security (PSD), General Intelligence Department (GID), and the Jordanian Armed
Forces-Arab Army (JAF).
The outbreak of
Israel’s war in Gaza acted as a significant
event and a cautionary signal for security agencies, highlighting potential
threats to Jordan's national security in 2024 and upcoming years. The war
created environments that facilitated funding, recruitment, and activities of
terrorist groups.
Moreover, in 2023, a dangerous trend emerged involving drug
trafficking gangs adopting new methods, such as drones, rockets, and explosives
to smuggle drugs from Syria to Jordan. These tactics contribute to the
recruitment and funding of terrorist groups and sleeper cells.
