AMMAN — Jordan
has been “among the best countries" in the Middle East in terms of
securing and stockpiling grain reserves amid the Ukrainian grain crisis, said
the
Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Jordan representative, Nabil
Assaf, on Thursday.

Speaking during an
FAO-organized training workshop at the Dead Sea, held under the theme
"Improving agricultural research for development and strengthening
institutional linkages between actors in the national agricultural research
systems in Jordan", Assaf said Jordan has been a “pioneer" in
drafting a national strategy for
food security and launching a higher food
security council.
Many countries, he
said, have endeavored to follow the Kingdom’s example in this regard, the
Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Food and energy
security challenges are "increasing", especially as world goes
through a transition phase in the agricultural sector as the global population
grows exponentially towards an expected 10 billion in 2050, requiring the integration
of technology, research, and innovation after a needs evaluation, Assaf said.
During the workshop,
the
FAO’s Rome director of agricultural innovation, Atef Sweilem, called for
further support of scientific research in the field, adding that research
institutions' linkages are still "weak and undirected". He also
stressed need to adopt a national development policy for agricultural research
that focuses on integrated roles.
