AMMAN – Zeina Toukan, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, met with Canadian Minister of International Development Ahmed
Hussen on Thursday during his visit to Jordan to discuss the two countries'
existing development cooperation program supporting the Middle East, Al-Mamlaka
TV reported.
According to a statement, Toukan thanked the Canadian government for
its assistance in prioritizing Jordan's development goals. This assistance
covers various sectors, including vocational and technical education, primary
education, economic growth, women's empowerment, and reducing the burden of
hosting Syrian refugees. She stressed the importance of this assistance in
fulfilling various developmental priorities along with the Economic Modernization Vision (EMV).
The continuation of international support for Jordan's response plan
to the Syrian crisis is critical for aiding the government in providing
essential services to refugees and host communities.
During the conference, plans were finalized to announce a package of
developmental projects to be carried out by various institutions. These
projects, totaling 95 million Canadian dollars (about JD50 million), are
intended to assist developmental priorities between 2024 and 2025. Education, the environment, energy, digitalization, entrepreneurship, and economic
empowerment for women are among the topics addressed. Agreements for these new
projects are scheduled to be signed by the end of March.
New initiatives receiving Canadian financing include
- The Aqaba Marine Reserve (AMR).
- Teacher Training Program.
- Support for strategic plans in education.
- Transition into vocational and technical
education.
- Promoting sustainable energy and economic
development.

Toukan also examined the forthcoming period's economic and development
priorities, focusing on education, water, and women's economic involvement. She
emphasized the necessity of Canada's ongoing assistance, naming Jordan as a
priority country for Canadian development funding. The purpose is to strengthen
the Kingdom's ability to accomplish significant development initiatives, such
as the National Water Carrier Project.
