The two-day
gathering, entitled the ‘’Sixth Brussels Conference on supporting the future of
Syria and the region,’’ opened in
Brussels on Sunday. It is organized by the
EU.
The meeting, which
coincides with the 12th year of the
Syrian conflict, seeks to boost
international support for Syrian refugees and their host communities in the
region through increased humanitarian aid and bolstering economic recovery in
the Middle East.
Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh is representing Jordan
at the conference. Al-Mamlaka said.
It said Shraideh
will brief attendees on challenges facing Jordan as a result of the crisis on
its northern border and urge continued global support for the Kingdom, being
one of the largest hosts of an estimated 670,000 Syrian refugees registered
with the UN.
Jordan hosted more
than 1.3 million
Syrians at the beginning of the crisis in 2011, including the
670,000 refugees registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. More
than 5 million Syrians have been displaced in the conflict and scattered across
many countries, including Jordan.
Discussions Monday will
provide a unique platform for civil society organizations in Syria with
refugee-hosting nations, countries involved in the Syria response, the EU, and
the UN.
