AMMAN — Dr. Mohammed Hawarat, the Director of the Communicable Diseases Department at the Ministry of Health, assured the public that anti-snake venom is readily accessible and regularly supplied to hospitals across the country. Dr. Hawarat highlighted that the anti-venom currently available in Jordan is specifically formulated to address bites from the Palestinian snake as well as other snake species prevalent in the region. Notably, Jordan is home to a total of seven snake species, each with its own distinct characteristics, Saraya News reported.

Recognizing the need for expanded coverage, the Ministry of Health has taken steps to request the registration and approval of anti-venom specifically designed for saw-scaled vipers. In the interim, they are seeking permission to utilize existing anti-venom until formal approval is granted. This development aims to bolster the country's preparedness in dealing with snakebite cases effectively. The Ministry anticipates the imminent availability of the requested anti-venom at healthcare facilities under its jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, prominent Jordanian snake expert Asad Al-Jazaawi has issued a warning regarding the growing presence of snakes in residential areas throughout the country. Alarming statistics reveal that 37 snakebite cases, resulting from encounters with Palestinian snakes and saw-scaled vipers, have already been treated since the beginning of this year.

Emphasizing the severity of the situation, Jazaawi singled out the black venomous snake as the most perilous species found in Jordan. This snake, known for its aggressive nature, carries four distinct types of venom, making it an especially potent threat to human safety.

The Ministry of Health continues to prioritize public safety and remains vigilant in addressing the potential risks associated with snake encounters. Regular updates and awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate the public on preventive measures and appropriate actions in case of snakebite incidents.
