2G was first introduced in the
Kingdom in 1995. The
Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) told media
that this suspension will stop support to feature mobile phones in the near
future, in addition to devices that do not support 3G and 4G services, to keep
up with the technological advances and 5G services.
TRC also stated that service
providers will support users affected by this suspension which could include
replacing old phones with new ones.
One service provider said it would
suspend 2G services by 2024, but the three telecommunications companies have
already taken steps in this direction, following a global practice and in light
of technological advances.
