Only two new political parties
were formed in 2021: Nabd Al-Wattan and Al-Nahij Al-Jadeed.
The
Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs has seen an influx of submissions to form parties, an
average of two applications per month, according to the ministry’s secretary-general
Ali Khawaldeh. The requests are subject to the current Political Parties Law.
If the anticipated political
parties draft law is passed unamended, it will require all current and forming
parties to revise and regularize their legal situation.
Khawaldeh confirmed that there
are groups holding discussions to submit applications to establish new parties.
There were 12 parties that
were in the process of being established as of October 2021, which rose to 16
in November of the same year, and increased again to 18 by the end of December.
