AMMAN – On Thursday, in response to escalating
tensions in the
Red Sea region, the
Jordanian Ministry of Transport initiated
new sea routes to ensure the smooth flow of goods and maintain the continuity
of the supply chain. The move comes amidst concerns over possible inflationary
effects and disruptions to maritime transport.

The ministry has coordinated with navigation
lines serving the Port of Aqaba to ensure the continuity of service, including
direct lines that cross the Bab Al-Mandeb strait. Additionally, collaboration
with Abu Dhabi ports has been established to operate feed lines to
Aqaba,
ensuring efficient and timely delivery of goods, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
Addressing concerns about rising costs and
delays in maritime shipping, the government has taken proactive measures to
mitigate the impact on Jordan's economy. This includes
setting ceilings for container prices to reduce customs duties and expediting clearance procedures
for goods, particularly essential commodities.
Furthermore, the government has allowed the
private sector to store food commodities at reduced prices, enhanced food
stocks, and stabilized prices in civilian and military markets.
Export restrictions on basic food items like sugar, rice, and vegetable oils have been
implemented to safeguard local stocks.
The developments in the Red Sea region,
coupled with global disruptions in maritime transport, have necessitated swift
action from the Jordanian government to ensure
economic stability and food
security. Efforts to find alternative sea transport routes and strengthen
market surveillance underscore Jordan's commitment to mitigating the effects of
regional tensions on its economy.
The Jordanian government continues to monitor
developments closely as reports come to light of strikes in Yemen carried out
by US and British forces as announced by the Houthi movement.
