AMMAN — The
World Bank's recent report has revealed that Jordan
is facing the highest smoking rates globally, posing a concern. The report
highlights that 24 percent of students aged 13-15 in the
Kingdom are current smokers, making it the region's highest smoking rate.

Increased usage of e-cigarettesAn alarming trend noted in the report is the
increasing use of e-cigarettes among young people, which could worsen the
situation. Moreover, over 6 out of 10 men (and 41 percent of the total adult
population) in Jordan are smokers, Alsaa reported.
One out of every 8 deaths are linked to
smoking
Meanwhile, the report highlighted that nearly
one out of every eight deaths in Jordan linked to these habits. The report
estimates that
smoking costs the country nearly $2.67 billion in healthcare
expenses and productivity losses.
Attempts to quit smokingHowever, the report also shows that half of the
current smokers in Jordan attempted to
quit smoking in the past twelve months.
Additionally, anti-smoking information on TV and radio has reached 50 percent
of adults.
