AMMAN —
The
Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship said it sought to provide
an investment opportunity in the national fiber-optic network for private
investors or operators in the private sector, through a competitive
international tender, according to Khaberni.

Details on the
tender were not immediately available. But the ministry said the project is
being implemented for the purposes of linking educational, health and
governmental institutions to a broadband network, which is a basic
infrastructure for Jordan and will provide access to e-government, health, and
educational services.
The project
includes about 1,856km of aerial fiber optic cables, and 4,300km up to 6,156km
of terrestrial fiber optic cables, completing all the phases of the project.
The number of
government sites already connected is about 2,424, which will grow to 3,000 sites
upon the completion of all the phases.
The ministry said
on its website on Sunday that the opportunity includes network leasing,
marketing, management, operation, and expansion throughout Jordan with the
ability to connect to other regional networks, through public-private
partnerships, or other business models that can be of mutual benefit.
The project aims
at linking
educational institutions, including public schools, community
colleges, knowledge stations, learning resource centers, health institutions,
medical centers governmental institutions, with a broadband network that is a
basic infrastructure for Jordan, and providing e-government and health, and
educational services through it.
The ministry said that it
encourages the private sector to maximize the utilization of the network and
achieve an added financial value by increasing the rate of penetration of
optical fibers nationwide.
