Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) said Jordanians will get a cellular phone authentication
e-service using the biometric ID by next year, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

The TRC said it is putting the “final touches” on
the technical features of the service, which was promised to be up and working
by early 2020, but was delayed apparently as a result of lockdowns caused by
the
COVID-19 pandemic.
The commission told the TV that the cellular phone
line authentication project, which will document each individual user’s
fingerprint, “is expected to be launched commercially next year”.
The TRC said the
purpose of the authentication is to ensure that all cellular phone lines
obtained from all communication firms operating in the Kingdom are documented
under the name of their real users to avoid unspecified “social and judicial
problems”.
While Jordanians are allowed up to 30 cellular phone
lines from each of the three major communications service providers in Jordan,
foreigners are allowed up to three lines from each of the firms.
A telecommunications sector report showed that the
total mobile phone subscriptions as of the first quarter of 2022 reached 7.3
million, which included 5.4 million prepaid subscriptions, while the remainder
was through billing.
The report said that mobile phones are used by 65.5
percent of the population.
