AMMAN —
Jaber Border Crossing personnel, in
cooperation with security bodies, foiled an attempt to smuggle 237,000 illicit

It quoted a
spokesperson for Jordan Customs as saying that his department closely
coordinates with the security authorities to address smuggling, trafficking,
and to nab the sources using modern techniques to enforce the rule of law, and
protect society from the hazardous and corrupt substances.
Jordan Customs
urged citizens to report any attempt they may know of, through the
Anti-Smuggling Operations Center, toll-free number 105.
In a related
development, the military
State Security Court sentenced three men to jail
after finding them guilty of having attempted to transfer a narcotic substance,
with the intent to traffic in illicit drugs, Al-Ghad News said. A fourth
suspect was acquitted for lack of evidence.
The case
involved the
Anti-Narcotics Department thwarting the attempt to smuggle 48kg of
cocaine into the Palestinian territory by seizing the drugs in postal packages,
which arrived earlier this year at Queen Alia International Airport.
The narcotics
were to be transported by courier service to Palestine, by crossing to the
West Bank overland through the King Hussein Crossing Bridge.
While one of the
convicts was handed down seven-and-a-half years in jail, the other two were
sentenced to 15 years at hard labor.
All three were also
fined JD10,000 each.
