AMMAN
— The former president of the Jordan Geologists Association (JGA), Sakher
Nsour, warned that Jordan is classified as a medium and weakened seismic zone,
meaning that hundreds of earthquakes will occur throughout the year without
much noticeable impact.

Data
from the JGA database indicates that Jordan experiences earthquakes ranging
from medium to weak, according to Nsour. The Anatolian plate is moving towards
the Arab plate and causing pressures and energy to build up, leading to
earthquakes, he added, according to a local media outlet.
Nsour
noted that the Dead Sea Transform fault system resulted from Jordan's position
on the Arabian Plate and Palestine's location on the Sinai-Palestine Plate.
The movement of these plates in both Jordan and Palestine is divergent, meaning they are moving away from each other, rather than collisional, resulting in moderate earthquakes.

The
Dead Sea Transform fault system, also referred to as the Dead Sea Rift, runs
from southeastern Turkey to the northern end of the Red Sea Rift and is the
boundary between the African Plate and the Arabian Plate.
