In an interview with Petra on Wednesday to
commemorate Mexico’s Independence Day, which falls on Friday, September 16,
Hernandez described Jordan as a model of tolerance and coexistence among all
societal components.
He called for capitalizing on both countries’
advantageous locations, as Jordan serves as a gateway to the Middle East and
Mexico does the same for the Americas.
He pointed out that trade between the two countries
was “modest and below aspirations,” totaling around USD1.5 billion over the
course of the last seven years. But he noted that efforts are underway, and
opportunities are available, to expand economic cooperation.
“It is necessary to take advantage of the free trade
agreements Jordan and Mexico have with the US to expand trade. Likewise,
negotiations for particular products sought after in the markets of both
countries should be encouraged,” Hernandez said.
He stated that Jordan and
Mexico agree on
international legitimacy decisions concerning the Palestinian cause and the
need to realize a two-state solution.
Hernandez emphasized the deep roots of
Jordanian-Mexican relations and their growth in a variety of areas,
particularly in academic, tourism, customs, and aviation partnerships, pointing
to initiatives and plans to launch direct flights between the two nations to promote
trade and tourism.
He noted that 12 agreements had been signed between
universities in Jordan and Mexico to facilitate scientific research and the
exchange of students and faculty, with additional partnerships being evaluated
or pending signing.
“International air services and civil aviation
between Mexico and Jordan will be bolstered, facilitated, and expanded through
an agreement that is currently in the works to boost tourism and trade between
the two friendly nations,” the ambassador added.
