AMMAN — Wednesday marks the 45th
anniversary of the death of Her Majesty Queen Alia, who passed away on February
9, 1977.
The late Queen was born in Cairo on December 25,
1948, where her father, Baha Uddin Toukan, served as the Kingdom’s ambassador.
She majored in political science at Loyola University in Rome, according to the
Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Since marrying His Majesty the late King Hussein and
until her passing, Queen Alia contributed to various women’s and charitable
activities. She also supported activities related to improving citizens living
conditions in various locations.
Active in charity
and social work, Queen Alia represented Jordanian women at many international
conferences, and served as a model for Arab women by encouraging their causes
and their participation in socioeconomic development.
In memory of Queen Alia, HRH Princess Haya established
Tkiyet Um Ali, a charity which aids underprivileged families. The project was
originally an idea introduced by the late Queen, who sought to help these
families.
