WCD was set to be observed by the UN every November
20; this year, it is held under the theme “Inclusion, for every child”.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Secretary-General
of the
National Council for Family Affairs (NCFA), Mohammad Miqdadi, said that
since its establishment, the council has adopted a “clear” vision concerning
childhood and early childhood issues, pointing out that NCFA came into being
following the adoption of the Early Childhood Development Strategy for 2000.
NCFA seeks to achieve the strategy’s objectives and
carry out activities that ensure the provision of comprehensive care for
children, he noted.
Miqdadi added that the Jordan’s adoption of the
Child Rights Law No. 17 of 2022, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of
NCFA, is its “most significant” achievement. The law works to protect children
and to ensure that their rights are respected, in view of the fact that many
are still exposed to various forms violence.
According to Miqdadi, the results of a national
study on violence against children that was prepared by NCFA in cooperation
with
UNICEF in 2020 showed that 74.6 percent of children in the 8–17 age group
were exposed to at least one form of physical violence, while 58.3 percent and
27.3 percent of the same group suffered at least one form of psychological or
sexual violence, respectively.
Meanwhile, 13.2 percent of the same cohort
reportedly had been exposed to at least a single form of cyber-bullying, he
noted.
