Indicators of peaceThe Global Peace Index is a report by
the Institute for Economics and Peace that measures the relative state of peace
in countries and regions.
The index was compiled in
consultation with an international panel of peace experts, based on data
collected by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
The index was launched for the first
time in May 2009, with annual reports published to show the state of the
world's countries in terms of peace, security, and stability.
It should be noted that peace
indicators over the past decade show a decline in general peace and security
around the world, and an increase in the gap between the most peaceful and
least peaceful countries.
The Global Peace Index covers 163
countries, representing 99.7 percent of the world's population. It is
calculated using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from reliable
sources.
It measures the state of peace
through three domains: the level of societal safety and security, the extent of
local and international conflict, and the degree of militarization.
