AMMAN — Jordan Ranks 6th Most Miserable in Arab World and 31st Globally in 2023 Misery Index. The main reason for Jordan's sense of misery is unemployment.

The index, issued annually by Steve Hanke, an applied economics professor at Johns Hopkins University, ranks 157 countries worldwide based on unemployment rates, inflation, debt levels, and changes in GDP per capita, Khaberni reported.

Argentina engulfed in a deep economic crisis, replaced Zimbabwe as the most miserable state, with inflation exceeding 250 percent. The banking lending rate stood at 95.5 percent, highlighting the dire economic conditions in this South American country for 2023.

16 out of the 20 most miserable countries in 2022 remained unchanged in the 2023 ranking, with Cuba, Sri Lanka, Ghana, and Rwanda dropping out of the list, while Egypt, Pakistan, Malawi, and Myanmar (Burma) joined.

The top 20 least miserable countries remained mostly unchanged between 2022 and 2023, with Ireland, Kuwait, Niger, Vietnam, Israel, the UAE, and Norway exiting the list, and Fiji, Bahrain, Denmark, Hong Kong, Germany, Mali, and Belgium joining.
