AMMAN — According to the
Global Obesity Observatory’s up-to-date statistics on obesity rates around the world, Jordan
ranks fourth in the Arab world and 23rd globally for obesity among men, at
29.17 percent of the male population, Saraya News reported.

Every year, the world marks
World Obesity Day on March 4 to spread more awareness about the dangers of obesity and being
overweight.
Obesity — abnormal or excessive fat
accumulation that poses a health risk — is one of the most common health
problems across the globe. Someone with a
body mass index (BMI) above 25 is
considered overweight, and a BMI over 30 indicates obesity.
On a global level, the problem has grown to
epidemic proportions, with more than 4 million people dying each year as a
result of being overweight or obese, according to 2017 statistics from the
"Global Burden of Disease" program.
Arab, global obesity ratesAccording to data from the Global Obesity
Observatory, Kuwait ranks first in terms of
male obesity rates among Arab
countries, with a rate of 34.28 percent, and 15th globally out of 200
countries. It is followed by Qatar, 16th globally and second in the Arab world,
with an obesity rate of 33.46 percent.
In 17th place globally and third in the
Arab world is Saudi Arabia, with a 31.73 percent
obesity rate among men.
After Jordan, the UAE comes in fifth among
Arab countries and 26th worldwide, with a rate of 28.44 percent.
Obesity among womenAs for obesity rates among women in the
Arab world, Kuwait also comes in first among Arab countries and ranks 14th
globally, followed by Qatar at 15th, Jordan at 16th, and Saudi Arabia at 17th.
Globally, the island of Nauru ranks first
in
terms of obesity rates for men, with a rate of 59.85 percent, and American
Samoa comes first in terms of obesity among women.
